A third consecutive successful game to start the NFL season would normally earn Michael Vick some attention, but not a crazy amount. His 321 total yards and four combined passing and rushing touchdowns in a road blowout of Jacksonville Sunday raise the volume a bit more. But Philadelphia’s next game all but guarantees something wild will happen.
One Donovan McNabb returns to Philadelphia this weekend. It’s like getting into a car crash, you finally calm down when it’s clear everyone’s alright and you realize in horror that the other car was carrying Miley Cyrus. This will not end quietly.
“Welcome to a week that promised to be very interesting from the moment the Eagles traded McNabb to the Washington Redskins,” the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Bob Ford writes. “The plot was already intriguing, with McNabb returning to match offenses with the young quarterback who toiled in his shadow for three years. Now it is even better.”
Only in Philadelphia can you raise the question of whether the Eagles’ top quarterback ever, who was shown the door in an offseason trade, will be booed when he returns. “There will certainly be Philly fans who cheer for McNabb because they are knowledgeable of the fact that he is clearly the best quarterback in Eagles history,” the Bleacher Report’s Ray Boyd writes, noting that there will be plenty of boos as well. “It’s funny how the people who advocated against Michael Vick’s return to football in the first place will be some of the same people who boo McNabb and cheer for Vick now. McNabb throughout his career has been nothing but a stand up individual.
